The 'Chamäleon' child care centre, opened on 1 October 2007, is Student Support Services’ newest child day care centre. On 27 September 2010 this day care centre was selected for the award “Excellence in Building in North Rhine Westphalia 2010” by the Ministry for the Economy, Energy, Building, Living and Transport together with the Chamber of Architects. The documentation for the award nominations included the following description (extract):

On the edge of a residential complex a series of buildings has been created that is reminiscent of a group of tents, constituting a supremely suitable playing and learning environment for children. The clear and functional arrangement of the layout facilitates rapid orientation. The external areas, which are so important for children to play in, are incorporated in a natural manner into the rest of the complex by the architectural design. The tent-like roof structures, topped by glass cubes in the group areas, create a generous, bright and airy feel.

The structural approximation of the tent motif creates a building that is perfectly suited to children. The whole concept of the single storey building reflects childlike proportions and is exemplary. The choice of colours and materials of the outer buildings with natural timber cladding and coloured accentuated panels is perfectly suited to the architectural task. This is continued in the careful and inspiring colour treatments of the interior rooms, without being intrusive.
