Important Information about Insurance Cover

Student Support Services Münster is not liable for any loss of or damage to the property of residents, including if the damage or loss is caused by a fault with the building, such as in the case of a burst water pipe.

We therefore strongly recommend you take out private home contents insurance cover.

Home contents insurance cover replaces your possessions in the case of damage caused by such things as:

  • Burglary and vandalism
  • Fire, lightning strike, explosion
  • Damaged plumbing
  • Storm and hail damage.

Because the theft of bicycles in the “bicycle city” Münster is on the increase, bicycles are usually no longer covered by a standard home contents insurance policy. However, most insurance policies can include an extra clause insuring bicycles as part of the home contents insurance policy as an optional extra. We also recommend that you register your bicycle with the police bicycle owner's registry, which you can do online.

Personal liability insurance is also recommended, because this offers protection against liability for damage that may be caused to others.

Personal liability insurance covers costs for damages to persons, things or property in the private sphere up to an agreed amount. Those living with their family or those still registered at their parents’ address are usually covered by family insurance policies. Everyone else is liable for the cost of any damage or loss they may incur.

We recoomend doing a health check of your insurance cover and considering taking out personal liability insurance cover if necessary.

Private personal liability insurance will offer cover in many areas of your life, such as:

  • Riding your bicycle on the street or as a pedestrian going shopping
  • At home, whether as a tenant or as a home owner
  • With the family, playing sport or during leisure time, on holiday and even world-wide.

Students completing their first undergraduate degree are covered by their parents’ insurance policy, however not all students are covered by their parents’ insurance. If you were employed full time before starting your studies or if you have already completed a degree, you are responsible for your own insurance cover.
