Important information for customers of Teleport Münster
Teleport Münster has ceased operations.
We apologise for the late notice of cancellation of your internet access provided by TELEPORT and we would like to offer what help we can by outlining your options and providing helpful information about finding another internet service provider.
1. Every TELEPORT customer is now free to switch to another internet service provider (ISP). TELEKOM is of course obligated to make your connection freely available.
An extract from the relevant announcement by TELEKOM states:
"From 1 January 2012 you can choose from a range of telecommunications providers for a DSL connection. Deutsche Telekom AG offers support via our website www.telekom.de or via our hotline on 0800 330 1000 to help with finding a new connection. It is not possible to retain the previous telephone number or connection. For both technical and legal reasons, Deutsche Telekom AG is not able to automatically take over the connection."
2. According to a statement made via telephone by T-Systems/TELEPORT, if 1,500 TELEPORT customers change over to Telekom or another ISP, it is to be expected that the installation of the new connections could take up to 4 weeks. So in general, the sooner you initiate the changeover, the better your chance is of having a new connection at the earliest possible date.
3. When considering changing service providers and entering into a new agreement for an internet connection, we highly recommend comparing options according to individual user needs with regard to data volume, the length of the contract, and your own internet usage habits, perhaps with the help of consumer testing information offered by Stiftung Warentest.
4. Our business partners Unitymedia, who already provide cable television to all our student residence buildings, are able to provide an internet connection to many of our student residences (click here for a list: Übersicht Stw. Wohnanlagen – Unity Media-Technik) within a week from close of contract for a fee of 20 € per month. Regardless of where your student residence is located, Unitymedia can provide bandwidths from 16,000 kb/s to 120,000 kb/s download speed and up to 5,000 kb/s upload capacity. The transmission quality of a UMTS or HSDPA signal should be seen in connection with the quality of the service provider’s network and can also depend on the building structure of the student residence, so for example, concrete structures may cause signal fluctuation. We recommend choosing an ISP that has a reliable reputation in this regard.
When choosing your new ISP it could prove useful to ask around among your fellow students, the other tenants, and those using alternative telecommunication technologies in your student residence. Our on-site property managers are happy to collect such anecdotal information and the knowledge resulting from such conversations and, with your permission, will make this information available to others.
It could take some months until a new agreement has been reached between your Studentenwerk and another ISP that can offer a tailor-made internet access solution for our students, which according to our requirements provides good coverage, good value for money and is also enabled for WLAN technology. We will inform you as soon as we are in a position to make a suitable option available.
